What's an Agent, and How Do I Build One?

Everyone's talking about AI agents and nobody's quite sure what they mean. This session cuts through it. An agent, at its simplest, is an AI assistant with a defined job, a set of instructions, and access to the right context — and you can build one today, in your browser, without writing a line of code. Tonight we build one together: a small competitive-intel or weekly-digest agent you can re-trigger any time. You'll learn the difference between a chat, a saved assistant, and a real agent — and how this same idea scales up from a tiny browser agent to the kind of automation we cover in the paid workshops.

The four ingredients.

Every real agent has these four pieces. Get them right and the agent does its job. Skip one — even the small ones — and it falls back into being a fancy chat.

  1. 01

    Job.

One specific outcome the agent owns. Not "help me with email" — "draft a reply to every new client inquiry in my inbox by 8am." A clear job is the difference between an agent and a chat window.

  2. 02

    Instructions.

How it does the job, in plain English. Tone, format, what to skip, when to stop. These are reusable — write them once, the agent uses them every time it runs.

  3. 03

    Context.

The reference material the agent needs every time — your resume, your meeting brief, your VIP list, your scoring rubric. Without context, the agent guesses. With it, the agent knows.

  4. 04

    Trigger.

What makes it run. A schedule (every Monday 8am), an event (new email matching a filter), or a button you press. This is the bit most "AI assistants" skip — and the bit that makes something a real agent.

Tonight's running example: a small competitive-intel or weekly-digest agent you can re-trigger any time. Three concrete agents to take home — meeting prep, job-hunt tailoring, or inbox triage. Pick one and walk out with it working.

Context File Examples.

Six real context file examples covering the five most common agent use cases — the kind of files you'd hand your own agent so it stops guessing and starts knowing. Use them as templates for your own version.

  • Sample PM resume — context for a job-hunt tailoring agent
  • Real job posting (Jobber · KW) — the role to tailor against
  • Cumulus meeting brief context — context for a meeting prep agent
  • Cumulus VIP & priorities — context for an inbox triage agent
  • Cumulus competitors — context for a competitive intel agent
  • Lean canvas rubric — context for a scoring / evaluation agent
